Could this be the end of the Republicans?

This was an important political moment. Forget the Presidential election for a second. This was, politically, more important than that. David Brooks captured it brilliantly in the New York Times. In an angry piece entitled "Revolt of the Nihilists", Brooks lays into Nancy Pelosi for using this hour of peril to make a Democratic fundraising speech. But most of all he lays into conservative Republicans: Now they have once again confused talk radio with reality. If this economy slides, they will go down in history as the Smoot-Hawleys of the 21st century. With this vote, they’ve taken responsibility for this economy, and they will be held accountable. The short-term blows will fall on John McCain, the long-term stress on the existence of the G.O.P. as we know it.

  6. #6    The history of the 'Republican' party, originally the idiot wing of the single 'Democrati-Republican' party, is one of repeating failed strategies, eschewing pragmatic or empirical solutions. With the rise of the corporate system, the GOP sold out completely to corporate interests. The deals cut by GOP leadership differ little from the deals Hitler cut in his famous meeting with I.G. Farben execs, Thyssen, Krupp et al. If it walks like a duck....

Fuck the GOP! I hope to God almighty that this IS the end of a sorry party of liars, crooks, and selfish, souless, psychopathic bullshit artists.

  7. #7    The GOP was almost completely shattered by the Primary fights this cycle, they factionalized so thoroughly that they ended up with McShame as their nominee, the one they all hated least. But the Oily-Greeedheads and the Fundamentalcases were brought back into the fold by the choice of Palin. Getting the big tent back up for one more circus.
I dearly hope that they will be buried in November, split into three or more groups that have little in common (aside from their base racism/xenophobia).
And watch for a push for third-party-enabling changes in the electoral system thereafter.

  9. #9    They'll re-emerge with a new label for the old one just as they do with their crooked businesses. They will still be fascist Republicans...but they will have a new Orwellian sell job..like "Compassionate Conservative". They have never been good for America ...they just have been dominant at having more money to buy more media to convince people they are good for America.
Americans spend too much time watching television, they've lost touch with reality.

Who's to say this wasn't her intent all along. Piss off the Rethugs, make them vote against it (The bailout) and let them pay the consequences. Maybe she picked up a few tricks from Rove after all.....

  13. #13    Interesting point there, Dano. It could have worked the other way around, too, that she knew it was a very unpopular bill, left right and center, and without a large, bi-partisan vote, she wasn't going to let it go through. If it became a partisan issue, it would be used by the GOP and the corporate press as a club to beat US with in November.
But I think the first bill died a natural death, it was a bad bill, a naked powergrab, people hated it right away on all sides of the equation, constituents were way ahead of the politicians and flooded their phones, fax lines and mailboxes with protest. Some of the Members shook off the panic and saw what a bad and unpopular idea it was and they killed it. If this revised version of the same bill, sweetened with pork and taxcuts gets through, you'll see just what motivated the Members that voted it down the first time.
