The Democratic health care bill is a massive bailout of the private health insurance industry. -- It is convoluted and complicated. --- And it should be defeated. --- That's the take of a number of leading single payer activists. They will hold a press conference the day before Thanksgiving. And call on Congress to defeat the more than 2,000 page bill. -- Start from scratch. --- And pass single payer, Medicare for all, national health insurance. -- The press conference will be held in the Murrow Room at the National P ress Club in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, November 25, 2009 at 10 a.m. The press conference is being organized by Single Payer Action. Speakers include: Russell Mokhiber, Single Payer Action. Dr. Margaret Flowers, Physicians for a National Health Program. Kevin Zeese, Prosperity Agenda. Dr. Carol Paris, Physicians for a National Health Program. -- On Wednesday, the Baucus Four will call on single payer supporters in the Congress - like Senator Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) - and the 88 members of the House who are sponsors of HR 676 - the single payer bill - to stand with Congressmen Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) and Eric Massa (D-New York) - and vote against the pending legislation. - HR 676 is about 30 pages in length. It's simple. It covers everyone. And it saves money. Kucinich and Massa were the only single payer supporters in the House who voted last week against Obama and the Democratic leadership. Kucinich called the Democratic bill "a bailout under a Blue Cross." Massa said the bill would "enshrine in law the monopolistic powers of the private health insurance industry." "The Obama health care legislation is a 2,000-page turkey," said Mokhiber. "It should be defeated and served up to the American people as an example of what happens when corporate lobbyists hijack Congress."

  1. #1    This is absolutely niave, or extremely cynical, either way, p!ss poor political advice. What makes this guy think that starting over will get a better result? The longer this drags out, the worse it gets, not better. Or hasn't anyone noticed? And the Insurance companies want to stall this off as long as they can. Or even better, con the "Liberals" into killing it. And what makes him think that starting this process over will even happen? Rejecting the reform bill reads as rejecting reform, making the next attempt that much harder.
    Anyway, it's moot. This train is rolling. A few diehard fantasists won't stop it, from either side of the aisle.

    Obama-care is a trillion dollar tax on low-income and retired Americans of which 10% goes to deficit reduction and 90% goes to the health mafia. The Individual Mandate Tax hits hardest at those earning between 100% and 200% of the Federal Poverty Level. The Dimofascists want millions of poor working Americans to pay this new tax every year and in return receive ABSOLUTELY NO HEALTH CARE.

    Obama-care is even worse than the terrible system we have now. The solution is not Dimofascist taxing the poor to benefit wealthy health mafia CEOs and the solution is not Rethuglican status quo. The solution is Single Payer.

  3. #3    Until the legislation emerges from the Conference Committee Sausage Grinder, it is probably premature to simply ASSUME it is going to BE sausage that nobody but the medical insurance industry/cartel will want to take home, but it is probably a good bet, in view of previous Conference Committee products.

  6. #6    This bill is written with dog feces on 2000 squares industrial grade toilet paper.
    First of all anyone capable of getting just two cerebral neurons to synapse knows that anything that come out of congress labeled as reform or relief has got "screw the lower 3 quintiles written in the big print all over it, throws some tidbits to the next higher quintile, a little bigger chunk to the 90-95 percentile,and just a little bit more to the 95-99 percent and the biggest benefit goes to that 1% at the top. Tell me when that has not been the case.

    Obama is toast in 2012. Even if we're at war with the rest of the world over default on the debt to the rest of the world.

    The new Surgeon general will shortly issuing a suggestion that everybody in the nation should take up Yoga - it'll make it so much easier to kiss our asses good bye.

  7. #7    The bill as it currently stands will do nothing to restrain, much less lower costs. conservatives have stripped everything decent from the bill. What is left is a giveaway to the medical industry which will result in unrestrained increases in costs and little or no benefit to consumers...in other words, exactly what rethuglicans claim about ALL government programs.

    The conservative assholes will then run on an "I told you so" platform and kick the crap out of Democrats in 2010 and 2012.
    It is far better that NOTHING is passed if we don't get, AT THE VERY LEAST, a true "public option" open to ALL americans and American businesses who choose it.

    The bill as written will simply delay the misery, continue murdering Americans, and set back single payer another generation.


    Single payer is the only true alternative to our third-world medical system. Obama knows that. He sold us out.
