Johann Hari: The real reason Obama is not making much progress

Despite the real improvements on Bush – such as the end of torture, the resumption of stem-cell research, and opposition to the coup in Honduras – many people are asking: why he is delivering so little, so slowly? A pair of seemingly small stories about the forces warping American politics can help us to answer this question. At first glance, they will seem like preposterous caricatures, but the facts are plain. The institutions that are blocking progress on all these issues – Republicans in the Senate, and the mighty corporate lobbying machine that bankrolls both parties – have rallied over the past few months to defend two causes with very little popular support in the United States: rape and slavery. No, really. If we begin to explain how this came to pass, then we might see why the American political system is malfunctioning so badly, even after a landslide victory for change.

  1. #1    "....change the rules of the game. Ban big business from making political donations, and replace it with state funding. Shut down the lobbying industry. Make a big populist speech announcing you are driving the money-lenders out of the temple of democracy: it'd be surprisingly popular in a country where people can see they're being ripped off every day"
Add that to the list of things Obama SHOULD do.
As opposed to the things that he CAN do.

  2. #2    Cause Obama never intended to make any progress. Simple as that.

  3. #3    Excuse me! But what does "rape and slavery" have to do with: 1) a prez that is not doing his job; and 2) a Congress that is not doing theirs. I would think that the very people that were going to rape you, and you knew they were rapists, that you would bring them into your home and make them a part of your family so that could have free rein over your wife and children.

So why are we making these stupid excuses for criminals and their corporate machines? Oh, I see, they are supposed to be separate. Everyone is separate and know one knows they are being used and abused, or are the users and abusers? Kind of like spouse abuse, huh? The wife knows but doesn't want to talk.

It is also like conspirators that knows about the conspiracy but doesn't want to talk.

  4. #4    "Giving congress a distinct and independent power to do any act they please which may be good for the Union, would render all the preceding and subsequent enumerations of power completely useless. It would reduce the whole Constitution to a single phrase, that of instituting a congress with power to do whatever would be for the good of the United States; and as sole judges of the good or evil, it would be also a power to do whatever evil they please. Certainly, no such universal power was meant to be given them. The Constitution was intended to lace them up straightly within the enumerated powers and those without which, as means, these powers could not be carried into effect.”

    Thomas Jefferson

And that should take care of making any excuses for the Congress...

  5. #5    Two Words: Hughey Long! Without the power of grassroots populism which significantly threatens the status quo and causes movement for change, we will have nothing more than Obambush until 2012 and then worse. And with permanent unemployment of at least 10.2% on AVERAGE and much higher in certain geographic regions you might think workers would have a chance by uniting. However, this time no Hughey Long or populism with influence will or can emerge. With globalization and foreign labor certification and training, it is an ugly illusion to think workers have any power at all; six workers for every one opening and yet the H-B1, H-B2, H-B2A, L-2 ad infinitum over the past 20 years has succes...
