Carl Levin Has A Surefire Way To End The War: Tax The Rich To Pay For It

Actually, it isn't just Carl Levin who is standing up and saying that if Obama wants to escalate the war in Afghanistan he's going to have to figure out how to pay for it without charging our great, great grandchildren... Three very senior Democrats in the House, David Obey (WI), chairman of the Appropriations Committee, John Murtha (PA), chairman of the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, and John Larson (CT), chairman of the Democratic Caucus introduced legislation that would impose a surtax beginning in 2011 to cover the costs of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. “For the last year, as we’ve struggled to pass health care reform, we’ve been told that we have to pay for the bill-- and the cost over the next decade will be about a trillion dollars,” the three lawmakers said in a joint statement. “Now the president is being asked to consider an enlarged counterinsurgency effort in Afghanistan, which proponents tell us will take at least a decade and would also cost about a trillion dollars. But unlike the health care bill, that would not be paid for. We believe that’s wrong.”

  1. #1    no no no ... bring back the draft and make it airtight so future Bush's and the other children of chickenhawks no longer get to sit it out. i.e. if the country is called to war its citizens, ALL OF THEM, know it and live it not just the underclasses.

  2. #2    Dammmm. there goes my argument for taking Universal Healthcare out of the General Fund. But seriously, this is one of the most irritating hypocracies that HCR cannot add one dime to the deficit BECAUSE we're already a Trillion in the hole from IraqAfPakGWOT. And ANOTHER trillion in BailoutBlackmailStimSurge.
So Mr Murtha, I'm all for what you are doing, but on this, I respectfully disagree: “The only people who’ve paid any price for our military involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan are our military families,”.
We are ALL paying for these wars, the poorest paying the most (of course).
It's about fu(king time the rich paid up. They've been getting a real good ride for thirty years now,...

  3. #3    #1 & #2 you are both making excellent points, how about also bringing back the draft in such a way that the first to go are from families making $250,000 or more and when we run out of people in the upper income range then it works its way back down, I doubt it would ever get there as like pointed out above if the rich were actually asked to pay for their wars and/or fight in them they wouldn't be so hot to have them....

  4. #4    #3 has the right idea - draft in descending order of wealth with the richest Americans sent to the front lines to die FIRST.
