  1. #1    Most US states have sales tax instead of VAT, so the argument in the article is false.

The wealthy are pushing for a national sales tax or VAT in order to transfer more of the nation's tax burden to poor people.

  2. #2    So, we are hurting ourselves. Which is absurdly insane. I have to think that since this is a corporate state, the management is extremely poor.

  3. #3    Hey I read the article -- VAT is not exactly a sales tax; the point is it is a tax that is only applied to import giving domestic manufactures/services a 20% discount or so depending on country -- it is also a driving force for outsourcing. The VAT is separate from the general sales tax, so, no, it is not the same as sales tax levied by states or localities.

  4. #4    "VAT is not exactly a sales tax"

That is not correct. VAT is a sales tax. Like any other sales tax, VAT applies to imports and local sales. Like any other sales tax, VAT does not apply to exports.

The only difference between VAT and a regular sales tax - the reason that Limbaugh's advertisers hate VAT - is that the way it's collected makes it much harder for business owners to avoid paying VAT.
