Rachel Maddow: The Healthcare Bill Contains a Poison Pill for Progressives

“It's the biggest restriction on abortion funding since the Hyde Amendment. It's the biggest restriction on abortion access in this country in a generation. And if it took a Democratic president, 60 percent majorities in the House and Senate of Democrats in order to get that, I think you can expect Democratic women to sit on their hands at least if not revolt if that doesn't get taken out in conference.”

  1. #1    Rachael: "I think that if the abortion related language is stripped out, Democrats could lose some conservative Senate Democratic votes. The abortion issue is a hot button topic that could sink this bill, and there is no way that the Democratic leadership is going to let that happen. My guess is that the Hyde language on abortion stays in the final bill." That's my guess, too. Look at the math -- there are far more progressive pro-choice votes to be lost in the House if that anti-choice amendment stays in place than the fewer regressive anti-choice Dem votes.

  2. #2    #1 -- ??? On one hand, you say your guess is that the monstrous anti-women language will be in the final bill -- then you say "...there are far more progressive pro-choice votes to be lost in the House if that anti-choice amendment stays in place than the fewer regressive anti-choice Dem votes." Which is it?

The FACTS are that the misogynists supporting Stupak (D-MI) included 64 Dems, and only 2 real progressives voted against the bill (Kucinich and Massa), out of the 57 who promised in July that a "public option" as weak as the one in the bill was unacceptable -- and that was BEFORE the hideous Stupak amendment.

  3. #3    RicK, you flipped that over. The math is right but to take it out rather than leave it in. Unfortunately, that doesn't mean that it'll go that way. If ever there was time when pressure from the Left wasneeded, RIGHT NOW is time to call and eMail your Senator to push them to strip this poison pill, if not in the Senate bill then in Conference.
Any CT readers out there, Lie berman is running a Tv ad that has a hotline asking people to call the number to thank Joe for defying the Healthcare reform. I don't know if it will register anything but "thanks" that is, I think all calls to that will be counted as opposing reform, so call his office numbers and hit his eMail. Slimy bas+ard won't listen but it's all we got right now.
If your Senator has ever objected to the Government "meddling" in the medical end of healthcare, ask them why they would back an ammendment that does exactly that. Because this defunds ALL abortions. Not just federally funded ones. All the Health Insurers are subject to this regulatory reform.

  4. #4    I see no contradiction, Nas. The draconian anti-choice amendment will be altered -- or there will be many more members of the House (170?) that will not vote "yes" on it, as compared with the 60-some troglodyte DINOs that that might vote against it.. besides the fact that they would be punished for that action -- Pelosi doesn't take prisoners, I suspect. Maybe I did not state this point clearly -- oops.

  5. #5    Choose any reason you want, but as it is now clear that the only reform that is in this bill is to enhance the profitability of the insurance companies, this bill needs to go down in flames before the Democrats get maneuvered into doing harm to the body politic.

  6. #6    DEMOCRATS TOOK AWAY THE RIGHT TO CHOOSE

The Democrats didn't have to allow an anti-choice amendment. They undemocratically blocked every other amendment including the state Single Payer amendment that had already been passed by majority vote. The ONLY amendment the Democrats permitted was the anti-abortion amendment.

That's all we need to know. We thought Democrats would die from Individual Mandate. This makes the end a hundred times more certain.

Obama has broken every promise he ever made, except those he made behind closed doors. Democrats cannot be trusted. DEMOCRATS TOOK AWAY THE RIGHT TO CHOOSE.

Everything is suddenly clear. Now there is only the Green Party. There is nothing else.
