Obama will send tens of thousands more troops to Afghanistan

According to US press reports Sunday, President Barack Obama has decided to send tens of thousands of additional US troops to Afghanistan in an attempt to suppress growing popular resistance to foreign occupation. The New York Times reported Sunday on its web site that the White House had narrowed its options in Afghanistan to three—all involving troop increases of 20,000, 30,000 and 40,000 respectively. The plans for escalating the war have come in response to the urgent request by General Stanley McChrystal, the US commander in Afghanistan.

  1. #1    Ah. Peace. Ain't it wonderful.

A presidency that began with bombs will end how? With flowers and chocolates?

  2. #2    As I recall, it was the last presidency that began with a bang. Then, because Americans are all fundamentally violent and retributive, we invaded and occupied the poorest country in the world and then invaded another sovereign nation to relieve them of weapons that never existed.

Note also that this 'scoop' can be found on the 'World Socialist Web Site' - I am not sure that this site is known for its accuracy of unannounced foreign policy decisions. Nope - looks like a cherry-picking job to me.

Anyway, Obama will probably send more troops, and we will lose another 500 or so before this is over, not to mention tens of thousands of Afghani bystanders.

Lesson learned - stop using war as a foreign policy tool. Let's see if Obama can figure this out in time.

  3. #3    I've been following this source of news for many years. It has proved to be accurate and well considered time after time -- unlike the New York Times and Reuters. I realize the term "Socialist" has been linked in people's "minds" by such "reliable" sources as those listed above as a signal that they are about to be exposed to propaganda. In the interest of accuracy, I propose changing the name of the New York Times to something more fitting, such as the "World Corporate Approved News Web Site." At least Socialists have the balls to unabashedly proclaim what they are.

  4. #4    Oh, and here it is in the New York Times for those who are impressed with that: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/08/world/asia/08troops.html "McClatchy Newspapers reported Saturday that Mr. Obama is nearing a decision to approve the middle option being drawn up by advisers, citing unnamed administration and military officials. White House officials denied Mr. Obama has made a decision or favors any of the options at this point, noting that they have not been formally presented to him. But administration officials confirmed that the 30,000-troop plan is under consideration."

  5. #5    I think its time to head for the streets when the previous administration went crazy. Sending more troops to Afghanistan is as crazy as invading, occupying, and destroying Iraq!

    PROTEST NOW!

  7. #7    Zelator, I think if Obama wanted to figure this out. He would have put this war on hold, instead of continuing the previous administration's policies. And, personally, I don't think Obama gives one good runny crap.

  8. #8    The neocon philosophy goose steps it's forward into war just as if no election has taken place at all! W and slick willie palling around together giving speeches and yukking it up at 150K a pop.

Yes the dynasties of the bush and clinton families are making killer coin these days, change they understand and believe in regardless of what it does to their country or constituents.

Obama's down with the neocons obviously.

So this is looking forward rather than equal justice under the law?

  9. #9    Want to end this thing? Bring back selective service. It will be over tomorrow. Even the rightest of the right don't want THEIR kids to be shot up. Look how much effort went into keeping W out.... instead of exploiting the unemployed underclass.

  10. #10    Yes, more people would actively oppose these criminal wars if there was a draft. But as it is now, the soldiers are victims too, and the services are being broken by this.
