"Family" Member Stupak Says He Can Block Health Care Bill

While Republicans have indicated that they consider the block of antiabortion, pro-life Democrats Stupak leads as their last best chance for sinking the Democrats' health care reform effort, Stupak says his threatened insurgency would be driven simply by his absolute refusal to allow any federal dollars to subsidize abortions under a new health care system. Stupak's position could hardly be better crafted to create an unresolvable impasse and that, in conjunction with his close association with the fundamentalist antidemocratic Washington influence peddling group known as The Family which some accuse of being an unregistered lobby, raises troubling questions.

  1. #1    I believe Pelosi worked a deal to move Stupid, uh, Stupak off of this position. He'll be able to attach his ammendment but it will be subject to a floor vote (which means it will be pulled back out).
That house on C street needs an exorcism.
    Maybe with Napalm.

  3. #3    I seriously doubt that Individual Mandate will stand.
    It's a head tax.
That's the Doomsday Book all over again. No one anywhere on the political spectrum can stand for that.
And particularly with the conservative-stacked courts, I'd lay steep odds that this will be challenged, successfully, in the courts before it ever goes into force.
Come to think of it, it could wind up being a deliberate throw-away.
    >thought experiment<
In order to get the "fiscal conservatives" (AKA greeedy bas+ards) on board, Admin. put in a provision with a fancy name that takes away the cons arguments about increasing the defict or raising taxes, knowing that the Courts would interpret this as a Head Tax and throw it out. Now they've passed this massive overhaul but the courts have taken away this mechanism for financing it.
Congress authorizes a tax hike accross the board, including corporate, drops the employer mandate in trade and funds the system out of the General Fund.
