Markos Moutlitsas bitch slaps an Ex-GOP Congressman for not serving in Vietnam. Poor Tom Tancredo, the truth hurts!

Markos Moulitsas, founder of The Daily Kos, chastised the former GOP Congressman Tom Tancredo for not answering his call to duty. Tancredo having obtained 1-Y status in 1970, after his student deferments ran out, on the grounds that he had been "diagnosed with depression when he was 16 or 17 and received medication for five years for panic attacks and bouts of anxiety and depression." Tancredo was 24 at the time. Hats off to Moulitsas!

  1. #1    Typical Republican. It's okay to send others off to kill and be killed, as long as he doesn't have to get out of his lounge chair. Depression, anal cysts, whatever....Republicans have a million excuses.....

  2. #2    Good on Markos!

A couple of years ago (while he was still in the House) Tancredo was on Hartmann's show. Hartmann asked him to name one bill - in the past 8 years that the Republicans had offered that favoredMiddle-calss Americans or the Poor over Corporations and the Rich. HE couldn't name one.

  3. #3    Well...there's a couple of things that bother me about that little contretemps - how are you anti-war if you're fighting in the war, and I also have heard - haven't we all, about the very poorly run VA? Not that I want to defend the execrable Tancredo, but I don't think that exchange will win hearts and minds. I think MSNBC gets a little too 'rahrah-for-our-side' [Not that these guys don't have it coming], but a more probative approach would be less like stooping to their level.

  4. #4    Many who serve in a time of war come back not wanting to send others into combat unless it's absolutely necessary. Vietnam has been viewed as a mistake by many. It was an experience that turned me against war as a way to achieve political objectives.

Even if Saddam had WMD, I was sure Iraq was not a threat. He didn't have the necessary delivery vehicles. Colin Powel told us this in Feb '01 and I believed him. We should have kept our forces in Afghanistan and maybe we would have finished that mission before now.

Markos did the right thing in putting Tancredo on the spot. Too many supporters of the war in Iraq were among the group that had 'better things to do' when given the opportunity to serve during Vietnam. They didn't mind sending other family's sons and daughters into harms way because they didn't understand the consequences of war.

Alice de Tocqueville, being a 72 year old Navy Chief Petty officer (retired) believe that I am probably well qualified to answer your questions. I spent over 20 years on active duty and was on active duty for the entire Viet Nam war, spending the better part of 5 years in and around Viet Nam. I have been a Socialist since birth as my mother left me with my Swedish and Norwegian Grandparents for the entire World War II. My grandmother was a Socialist with a capitol S. My grandfather was a Democratic Party Member and I never heard him once cro...

  6. #6    Maheanuu, I guess my comment wasn't very clear. I have nothing but contempt for Tancredo and the other chickenhawks, but like you, I'm wishing something will 'pull the country together', and I just wonder if being as chauvinistic as Faux News will do it.
As for my other point, when more vets speak up and counsel the next generation not to get sucked into the war machine, when 19-year-olds think for their country before they offer their lives for their country, then we'll have a country worth fighting for.
I'm glad you have health care - wish I did.
