Guidelines in Choosing a Gym That Works Best For You

Memberships in gym cost money so if you are not absolutely sure that you will use the gym, don't apply. Obvious things in choosing the right gym may be overlooked, like the qualifications of the instructors. Presented here are some tips that could help you choose the gym that will give the best value for your money. 1. Take note of the location of the gym, it must be conveniently located. If the gym is far from your home or your workplace, most probably there will be times that you will not attend your workout session. You will have a much better chance of maintaining your workout program if you can get to the gym easily. Moreover, you can also save your time, energy, and money. 2. Learn what the membership costs and what it includes. If you think you're not going to use the swimming pool, aerobic classes, and sauna, ask on how you can avail the membership without these facilities. Is there an additional fee for lockers? Is there a reduced membership fee for seniors? Is the membership adjustable into monthly, semi-annually, or annually? Is there a cancellation fee? How much? 3. Ask if they have gym schedules available for your time. 4. Is the gym environment comfortable for you? See if the machines and locker room are clean.

US Denies Combat Operations in Philippines by Jason Ditz

US officials today say that in spite of previous claims from a retired Philippine Navy lieutenant, the hundreds of US troops on the ground in the Southern Philippines are not actually involved in combat operations, but are merely there for temporary training of the Philippine soldiers.[Wow! We are getting ready to violate this nation's constitution AGAIN!]

Tomgram: Withdrawing by Bike from Iraq

"In imagistic terms, the Bush administration biked into Iraq. Back in its salad days, when all was green and upbeat, its top officials loved the idea that they were training the eager Iraqi kid in how to ride the bike of democracy. President George W. Bush liked to talk about the moment when we might take the "training wheels" off the Iraqi bike and let the little fella ride into the democratic sunset on his own." NOTE: What disgusting, demeaning, paternalistic BS!

Mercenaries training US local police a new trend

There are many police and law enforcement officials who are concerned with the growing trend of using military-experienced mercenaries to train and work with local police officers in the United States, but there are many who believe the events of September 11, 2001 dictate the need for this new paradigm. For example, Kentucky’s Lexington Police Department contracted Blackwater Security International to provide what’s described as homeland security training. Meanwhile that city’s Mayor Jim Newberry and its chief of police Anthony Beatty refused free training provided by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement federal program that prepares police officers to enforce immigration and border security as part of their duties.

Despite Pledge to Cut Military Ties to Coup Regime, US Continues to Train Honduran Soldiers at School of Americas

While the European Union cut off aid to the coup regime in Honduras, the United States continues the money flow, and while the US says it has cut military ties, the National Catholic Reporter reveals Honduran army officers are still receiving military training at the notorious School of the Americas in Fort Benning, Georgia. [Note: Nothing new here. We are helping the opposing side. You know. The ones that have planned the coup.]

A War Crime in Iraq The New Yorker

A REPORTER AT LARGE about the fatal shooting of eight Iraqi men during a U.S. Army-led mission called Operation Iron Triangle in May of 2006. Writer tells about Army Colonel Michael Dane Steele, a veteran of actions in Somalia and Bosnia and the commanding officer of Operation Iron Triangle. When Steele landed in Iraq, he was the only brigade commander there to have experienced sustained urban warfare before 9/11. He arrived with a clear sense of purpose: to subdue violence with violence, to hunt down and kill insurgents. A number of soldiers, among them General Peter Chiarelli, the Army’s Vice-Chief of Staff, believe that Steele set the conditions for a massacre by cultivating aggressiveness in his soldiers, and by interpreting the rules of engagement in a way that made the killing of noncombatants more likely. Steele has since entered Army folklore as a cautionary figure. The debate over Steele’s leadership touches on larger questions about modern warfare: about the distinction between killing and murder on the battlefield. As Major General Michael Oates told the writer, “The story of Colonel Steele and Operation Iron Triangle is about a fundamental difference of opinion about how to prosecute the war in Iraq.” Tells about the third brigade of the 101st Airborne Division, which Steele commanded. Its members are known as Rakkasans, and have a reputation for aggressiveness and individual initiative. Describes how Steele prepared his men for combat in Iraq.

Spy Training Program Could Come to Universities - washingtonpost.com

To the list of collegiate types -- nerds, jocks, Greeks -- add one more: spies in training. The government is hoping they'll be hard to spot. The Obama administration has proposed the creation of an intelligence officer training program in colleges and universities that would function much like the Reserve Officers' Training Corps run by the military services. The idea is to create a stream "of first- and second-generation Americans, who already have critical language and cultural knowledge, and prepare them for careers in the intelligence agencies," according to a description sent to Congress by Director of National Intelligence Dennis C. Blair. Note: Just about the time you think you have heard it all, you haven't heard nothing. Wait till you read whose name is on this program. Hint: It is in the next to the last paragraph. I hope I read it wrong!

U.S. watchdog faults Afghan troop training oversight

The U.S. military command that trains Afghan forces, a key part of Washington's war strategy, lacks the capacity to oversee multimillion-dollar contracts it has awarded, a watchdog reported on Tuesday. The Combined Security Transition Command Afghanistan is responsible for programs worth some $15 billion to develop Afghan security forces so they can take over from U.S. and NATO troops in leading the fight against Taliban militants. Yet the U.S. government watchdog found that the command had only one person in Afghanistan dedicated to overseeing a contract worth $404 million to provide training to Afghan police and soldiers.

Scouts Train to Fight Terrorists, and More

"The Explorers program, a coeducational affiliate of the Boy Scouts of America that began 60 years ago, is training thousands of young people in skills used to confront terrorism, illegal immigration and escalating border violence — an intense ratcheting up of one of the group’s longtime missions to prepare youths for more traditional jobs as police officers and firefighters. “This is about being a true-blooded American guy and girl,” said A. J. Lowenthal, a sheriff’s deputy here in Imperial County, whose life clock, he says, is set around the Explorers events he helps run. “It fits right in with the honor and bravery of the Boy Scouts.”"

Pilots shared fear of icy weather in last moments

Just seconds before the worst U.S. air crash in more than seven years, the pilot exclaimed "Jesus Christ" and moments later his first officer screamed as Flight 3407 plunged to the ground. A cockpit voice recorder transcript released Tuesday by the National Transportation Safety Board shows that only minutes before the Feb. 12 crash on approach to Buffalo Niagara International Airport, Captain Marvin Renslow and First Officer Rebecca Shaw chatted about her career and shared their fear of flying in icy weather. Moments later the Dash 8-Q400 Bombardier, a twin-engine turboprop, experienced an aerodynamic stall and plunged into a house, killing all 49 people aboard and one man on the ground. The transcript was released as the safety board opened a three-day public hearing Tuesday into the accident. The board was expected to focus heavily on pilot training and fatigue. Note: There needs to be more a focus on pilot training only. A slow-learning pilot makes me wonder, a lot!

Darpa Wants Puppy-Training Machines

"...the Defense Department wants to shape real dogs' minds, without resorting to oh-so-passe human trainers – or their archaic techniques of squeaky toys and personal affection. 'Automated mammalian training devices' are the latest out-there idea from Pentagon spooky research arm Darpa, as it furthers its plot to replace every last military staffer with either a computer or a more subservient creature."

Wikileaks: Counterinsurgency

Wikileaks has released thousands of pages of active insurgency and counterinsurgency doctrine from the US, UK and Indian military. The policies will be of particular interest to journalists and academics from, or specializing in, South America, Africa, Central Asia, Iraq and Kashmir. The release includes several counterinsurgency doctrines (more traditionally called "Foreign Internal Defense") which detail how to overtly or covertly supress insurgencies or popular revolts as well as the reverse, insurgency doctrines--how to infiltrate a country, and stoke an insurgency to overthrow a foreign government, commit sabotage and subversion, economic and financial warfare as well as "nonconsensual abductions" and the wearing of enemy uniforms in violation of the Geneva conventions.

Save the Whales, or the U.S. Navy Sonar? - Case Before the Supreme Court Pits Marine Life Against Technology

National security and environmental law went head-to-head today at the Supreme Court when a government lawyer argued the U.S. Navy's use of sonar for antisubmarine-warfare training is critical for national defense, while environmentalists claimed the practice causes irreparable damage to marine mammals. The justices will have to decide whether a lower court was correct in its decision to limit the exercises, and whether the executive branch can give the Navy an exemption from federal environmental laws. [ BUSH, ACTING IN UNITARY EXECUTIVE MODE, DECLARES THE NAVY EXEMPT FROM CERTAIN ENVIRONMENTAL LAWS - LEGALITY OF THIS MOVE IS QUESTIONED. MUST SEE VIDEO REPORT AND MORE DETAILS AT THE STORY SITE ]

Richard Seymour: The Nazi Army

It has been understood for some time that the US far right has been infiltrating the military. The Southern Poverty Law Centre has published details of this in the past. The issue has been discussed at times in the media outlets such as MSNBC. Recently, Matt Kennard conducted extensive research into the matter, interviewing far right activists and obtaining important and revealing data through FOIA requests. He has found, among other things, that in order to keep the "troop-hungry" war going, the US government has substantially relaxed standards in a way that has allowed many neo-Nazis to get into the army. He has obtained ample testimony that they are known about, and permitted to operate, and even welcomed by superior officers. What this means for Iraqis on the ground is often explained by the Nazi activists themselves: killing "towelheads". It also means that white supremacists are coming back from armed combat with weapons training, as did Timothy McVeigh, convicted of the bombing of the Alfred P Murrah federal building. So far from being inculcating Paine-ite values, the 'war on terror' is incubating and developing fascist race warriors.
