Attorney General Eric Holder defended his decision to try Khalid Sheikh Mohammed in a federal criminal court in New York City rather than by military commission.

Recent comments show that Republicans are attempting to stoke fear in New York City in order to exploit it for their own political gain. If Republicans earnestly want what's best for New York and the country, they will stop fantasizing about terrorism to attack political opponents.

Speaking on the House floor, Rep. John Shadegg (R-AZ) went after Mayor Bloomberg personally, suggesting that the mayor's daughter could be "kidnapped at school by a terrorist" because of the decision to try 9/11 terrorists in New York City.

These wars themselves are insane, and the US military practice of plucking people from Hispanic, African-American, other minority and poor white communities to send them off to fight for "freedom," offering them the promise of a "brighter future," is abusive, offensive and harmful to the health of this nation and this world. Not to mention the fact that what our occupying forces have done in Afghanistan and Iraq is a sin against humanity: All the killing, the torture and the degradation have sown seeds of hatred and resentment, creating deep wounds that future generations on this planet will somehow have to find a way to heal. What also shouldn't come as a surprise to us is that the American people, who, generally speaking, ignore much of the reality of what takes place on planet Earth, have begun to consider the idea that the psychiatrist did not go mad by repeatedly bearing witness to the tormented stories of haunted and grief-wracked patients, but rather that this attack was part of a terrorist conspiracy carried out by Nidal Malik Hasan. It appears that the reasoning behind this latter theory is based solely on the fact that Hasan's name sounds foreign and that he is a Muslim of Palestinian descent. What should surprise us is that, in spite of all the paranoia in the United States, the nation did not take better measures to prevent what happened at Fort Hood, the very site where two incidents of a smaller scale had already taken place.

People who label Nidal Malik Hasan a "terrorist," like Joe Lieberman just did, literally don't understand the meaning of the word. And how can they keep us safe from terrorism if they don't even know what it is? Here's what Sen. Lieberman said: ""There are very, very strong warning signs here that Dr. Hasan had become an Islamist extremist and, therefore, that this was a terrorist act." Here's a fairly concise definition of the word 'terrorism', drawn from the Random House Dictionary: "The use of violence and threats to intimidate or coerce, esp. for political purposes." (emphasis mine) Had Dr. Hasan become "an Islamist extremist"? It sure looks that way. But was the horrific slaughter he carried out intended to "intimidate or coerce" anyone? We've heard no evidence to that effect. These terrible killings may have just been an expression of inchoate rage. And if we don't know whether coercion or intimidation was the goal, than we certainly don't know if it was done "for political purposes." Sen. Lieberman's statement, on the other hand, probably was made "for political purposes." And bigotry might be a factor, too, don't you think? After all, the Senator made no such statements about other shootings at military facilities.
