Matt Taibbi - Taibblog – Goldman One-Ups Gordon Gekko, Says Jesus Embraced Greed

“The injunction of Jesus to love others as ourselves is an endorsement of self-interest,” Goldman’s Griffiths said Oct. 20, his voice echoing around the gold-mosaic walls of St. Paul’s Cathedral, whose 365-feet-high dome towers over the City, London’s financial district. “We have to tolerate the inequality as a way to achieving greater prosperity and opportunity for all.” via Profit `Not Satanic,’ Barclays Says, After Goldman Invokes Jesus – Bloomberg.com. I didn’t believe this story was true at first — thought it had to be a spoof. But it turns out to be true. The great banks of the world have gone on a p.r. counteroffensive in Europe, and are sending spokescrooks in shiny suits into churches to persuade the masses that Christ would have approved of the latest round of obscene bonuses. Goldman Sachs international adviser Brian Griffiths explains it this way: that Christ’s famous injunction to love others as one would love oneself actually means that one should love oneself as one would love oneself. This seemingly baffling outburst by a Goldman executive in what appears to have been a prepared speech — someone actually wrote this, and thought about it, before saying it out loud — gets even weirder when one tries to figure out what could possibly have motivated this person, and by extension his employer Goldman Sachs, to make such statements in such a place as St. Paul’s Cathedral.

Jesus and the Loyalty Oath - Gotta Fill Out The Form!

Archaeologists recently unearthed one of the rarest finds in Christendom. It was an application (printed on papyrus) in which Jesus asked those seeking his aid whether they had done certain things. Suffice it to say that Jesus was not a believer in universal miracle coverage.

On Life In The Modern World, Or, What If Jesus Was An HMO?

Those among us who are familiar with the Bible will recall that Jesus Christ himself was an active member of the health care community as he traveled about the Holy Land. It is reported that he practiced within multiple medical specialties, and his works as both an ophthalmologist and a neurologist are recounted within the verses of the Gospels. But what if Jesus had been practicing medicine in the therapeutic environment we’re familiar with today? In today’s conversation we’ll be tagging along with Jesus as he takes a few calls at his HMO’s Customer Care Center—and by the time we get done you should be able to bring a whole new take to those discussions you‘ve been having about why reform matters.

Pastor welcomes guns in church

"A gun-toting Kentucky pastor says it's OK to bring weapons to church — at least for one day. Ken Pagano asked his flock to bring their unloaded handguns — in holsters — to New Bethel Church in Louisville for a celebration of the Second Amendment of the U.S. Consitution that guarantees the right to bear arms. More than 200 people answered his call."

'Witness for Jesus' in Afghanistan

"US soldiers have been encouraged to spread the message of their Christian faith among Afghanistan's predominantly Muslim population, video footage obtained by Al Jazeera appears to show. Military chaplains stationed in the US air base at Bagram were also filmed with bibles printed in the country's main Pashto and Dari languages. In one recorded sermon, Lieutenant-Colonel Gary Hensley, the chief of the US military chaplains in Afghanistan, is seen telling soldiers that as followers of Jesus Christ, they all have a responsibility 'to be witnesses for him.'"

God tells Christ: tell the people to send red envelopes to the White House

Christ Otto, a self-described grassroots organizer from Boston received a message from God recently: As I was praying, I believe that God gave me an interesting idea. Out in the garage I have a box of red envelopes. Like the powerful image of the red LIFE tape, an empty red envelope will send a message to Barack Obama that there is moral outrage in this country over this issue. It will be quiet, but clear.

Jesus was a community organizer

Community organizers are either villains or saints depending on who you listen to while union organizers are described in anti-union propaganda as thugs coercing workers to sign union cards as an easy get rich scheme for fat cat union bosses in Washington. In fact the typical union organizer, in my experience, is a young person who like the typical community organizer is a disciplined idealist who believes that sound organizing principles grow movements and bring change. By that standard Jesus was an organizer. Jesus built a movement following principles fundamental to today’s organizers:

Jesus the illegal immigrant

Approximately 2000 years ago a married couple, Joseph and Mary and their baby Jesus, because of the hate of Herod king were forced to escape to Egypt. In this foreign land the three were in fact illegal immigrants...

The most reasonable reply as to why Christians consume so much at Christmas: What Would Jesus Buy?

I live in Canada, and the dominant religion here is Western Christianity, followed closely by consumerism, or it is the other way around? The closest I ever came to getting an honest answer from a Christian as to why Christians tend to give presents to others at Christmas, was that: “God had given us a gift with Christ, so we celebrate this time of year by giving and receiving gifts from others.” In recognition of a reasonable reply, the documentary, “What Would Jesus Buy?”

Jesus Was a Jew, But Didn’t Eat Chinese for Xmas

Is it Christmas yet? As we face an economic crisis and a new Administration coming in to revlieve the incompetent old one, the Philadelphia Inquirer focuses on the sappy today, even while at the same time claiming to hold a public trust for the reader. They can’t even get facts straight about new Christian traditions.

The Palin Doctrine: Jesus was a terrorist

Palin has been trying to draw a connection between Obama and Ayers, who have almost no connection with each other. However, by using her own standard, Palin is a self-proclaimed worshipper of Jesus Christ. Who were Jesus' best friends? Murderers, theives and Prostitutes. What does that say about Sarah Palin who worships this man?

Jesus Camp, awesome documentary - movie about Sarah Palin's church

Jesus Camp is a 2006 documentary directed by Rachel Grady and Heidi Ewing about a Pentecostal/charismatic summer camp for children who spend their summers learning and practicing their "prophetic gifts" and being taught that they can "take back America for Christ." According to the distributor, it "doesn't come with any prepackaged point of view" and tries to be "an honest and impartial depiction of one faction of the evangelical Christian community”. "Jesus Camp" - the movie about Sarah Palin's Church

Palin's churches are actively involved in a resurgent movement that was declared heretical by the Assemblies of God in 1949. This is the same 'Spiritual Warfare' movement that was featured in the award winning movie, "Jesus Camp," which showed young children being trained to do battle for the Lord.

Comeback of the Week: Jesus was a Community Organizer

Sarah Palin derided Barack Obama for being a Community Organizer, evidently forgetting that from childhood she had been taught about the virtures of Jesus being a community organizer. She also forgot that Ponius Pilate was a Governor.

Tax Exemption Without Limitation - Now That's Christianity

The religious right frequently adopts inconsistent positions. The latest is a plan to defy the IRS code that requires churches to forego making partisan political endorsements if they want to maintain their tax exempt status. I guess they want their cake and eat it too.

Why Berlusconi beat the ‘Italian Obama’

3rd term for ‘Jesus Christ’ of Italian politics reveals about democracy, corruption & cult of personality.."shows that Italian voters are so disillusioned by more than a decade of anti-corruption witch-hunting that they are willing to return to office the man who was described as the most corrupt of them all: Berlusconi."

Jesus Camp & Hitler Youth - A Little History Repeating!

Let us not forget how Hitler used youth indoctrination to accomplish his transformation of Germany from a power house Democracy to a Totalitarian Regime. He did it using the children. Hitler youth organizations began recruiting in 1922, by 1935 (twenty three years later, one entire generation of youth) Hitler had embroiled 60% of the youth in Germany. Isn't this all just a little history repeating itself, are we powerless to stop the coming slaughter of innocents?

Jesus cosmetics prove too cheeky for Singapore

"Want to use Jesus hand cream? Well, you can't anymore. At least not in Singapore. A Singapore-based retailer pulled a line of cheeky Jesus branded cosmetics [called 'Looking Good for Jesus'!!!] from its shelves after complaints from irate Catholics, the local newspaper reported on Tuesday."
