Arlen Specter: the Democratic Party's magic bullet

Many of you are too young to remember the span of Arlen Specter’s career as a DC politician. In 1964 Specter was serving as junior counsel for the Warren Commission , the investigative body established after John Kennedy’s assassination to contain and spin that horrific event.

Hidden History: JFK shooters probably escaped Dealey Plaza underground through sewer line

In the section that purports to lay out the details of the JFK assassination, the Key states, "Roselli shot Kennedy once hitting the right side of his head and blowing his brains out with a rifle from behind a fence in the grassy knoll area. Roselli and his timer went down a manhole behind the fence and followed the sewer line away from Dealey Plaza."

No One Is More American Than I Am

Predictably, after the Ft. Hood shooting some idiot conservatives are suggesting that we do some sort of loyalty exam for Muslim-Americans before allowing them into the US military. Who is "we"? Who gets to do this exam? What, presumably more American people like whites or Christians? Why don't Muslim Americans decide which Christians get to enter the US military? Oh, does that sound offensive? Does it sound weird? Why should it sound any different than Christians getting to decide which other Americans they will allow into the US military?

Obama Administration To Take Final Step Ending 'Discriminatory' Travel Ban

The administration on Monday will take the final step toward ending a decades-old ban against those infected with HIV from traveling to the United States. President Obama announced at the White House his intention to end the policy, which he says was "rooted in fear rather than fact."

Media Liars and Whitehouse Bad Cops Are Pimping the Trigger

The way I see it, there are two ways of looking at the talk, which is rife, that Obama wants the trigger so he can keep Olympia Snowe. ...You can buy the stories. ...Or you can consider that the stories are being shilled by a mix of cooperative media serving the health insurance industry and dupes who just stenographically pass this health care company asymmetric media warfare propaganda along.

Gaza Israeli war crimes Israeli State terrorism Children victims White phosphorus bombs on an UNRWA school in Beit Lahiya, January 17, 2009 Silvia Cattori: In June, you started to be concerned by an increase in the number of babies born with birth defects. We would be very interested to have your medical assessment and to know the result of the study you made of this troubling phenomenon. Can you tell us the ratio of prenatal and postnatal birth defects ten months after the attacks on Gaza in comparison with the same period in 2008, in terms of the number of cases involved?

Letterman's love nest over the Ed Sullivan Theater

In a stunning revelation, former staffers claim David Letterman had a 'bachelor pad' built on an upper floor of the venerable Ed Sullivan Theatre, from which his show originates. This suite was one of the places where he wooed and cavorted with female staffers, one of whom he married. Letterman recently revealed another relationship with a former staffer on his nationally televised late night show.

Docs as Props– Healthcare-NOW!

A majority of doctors support Single Payer so when Obama invited a hundred doctors to the White House they thought they would get a chance to talk to him. Instead they were used as props for a photo-op and then sent home. What a waste! Think how many people those doctors could have treated if they hadn't wasted a day. Think how disgusted they feel at being *used* as photo props to push Obama's awful Individual Mandate plan. Think how much wisdom they embody if Obama had been willing to listen. But Obama only listens to corporate lobbyists with millions to spend on denying health care to Americans.

White House Calls Out Fox By Name For Lying

In a new post on the official White House blog, an administration official specifically names Fox News for lying about the administration's push to bring the Olympics to Chicago. ... Dick Armey, civil rights hero - Joan Walsh

"Friday represented another stage in Armey's public redefinition and rehabilitation: From corporate shill to civil rights hero! The flack for Armey's FreedomWorks, the big-business-funded right-wing Astroturf group that helped organize the 9/12 protest and tea party movement, boasted that Armey is merely learning from the great struggles of the 1960s, especially the civil rights movement, as he bravely fights to deny health insurance to people who can't afford it."

Has the Stimulus Really Created or Saved One Million Jobs?

On Thursday, the president’s Council of Economic Advisers released its first quarterly report (PDF) on the economic impact of the stimulus. The next day’s headlines seized on a single number in the report: one million, the council’s estimate of how many jobs the stimulus had created or saved. But how solid is that number? According to the report itself, not very.

Where Are The White People With Good Sense?

Where are the white people with good sense these days? Are you out there? Because a frenzied subset of our paler population are withdrawing their budding genuises from school today so that Little Johnny will not have to be subjected to listening to that bad, bad man, President Barack Obama.

Even Babies Discriminate: A NurtureShock Excerpt. | Newsweek Life

Vittrup was taken aback—these families volunteered knowing full well it was a study of children's racial attitudes. Yet once they were aware that the study required talking openly about race, they started dropping out. It was no surprise that in a liberal city like Austin, every parent was a welcoming multiculturalist, embracing diversity. But according to Vittrup's entry surveys, hardly any of these white parents had ever talked to their children directly about race. They might have asserted vague principles—like "Everybody's equal" or "God made all of us" or "Under the skin, we're all the same"—but they'd almost never called attention to racial differences. They wanted their children to grow up colorblind. But Vittrup's first test of the kids revealed they weren't colorblind at all. Asked how many white people are mean, these children commonly answered, "Almost none." Asked how many blacks are mean, many answered, "Some," or "A lot." Even kids who attended diverse schools answered the questions this way.

White Christian America versus Everybody Else

In the current issue of The Nation ...snip... Chris Bowers pointed out a structural truth that lies at the heart of both American political parties. In the Age of Reagan, it came to pass that the GOP consolidated itself as the party of people who are white and Christian. Everybody else—black, brown, women, gays, immigrants, urban dwellers, non-Christians, you name it— found themselves on the receiving end of conservative scapegoating so often that they eventually decamped and aggregated in the other party. At this point, it's statistically true that If you are either not white or not Christian, then you are (with varying degrees of certainty, depending on what you identify as) far more likely to be a Democrat.

Republican’s Search for “Great White Hope” Shows the GOP’s Gut Punch Stupidity-Bonnie Erbe-US News

Pardon me. I'm still reeling from the gut-punch stupidity of some members of the GOP. If they can't get away from antiquated, racist and race-based statements, they have no future as a national party. The latest explosion emanated from the largely unknown Rep. Lynn Jenkins of Kansas while at a town hall meeting in her home district last week. According to ThinkProgress, Jenkins was trying to offer encouragement to conservative activists by saying there were some "really sharp" young Republicans in the House. Republicans are struggling right now to find the great white hope, said Jenkins. Said spokeswoman Mary Geiger, "What she meant by it is they have a bright future. They're bright lights within the party."Yes, but they all "happen" to be white males. Not just a poor choice of words, an inexplicably nuclear choice of words.

Microsoft Apologizes for Photoshopping Black Man out of Advertisment

Many unfortunate incidents in the business world fall under the realm of "What could the involved parties possibly have been thinking?" Microsoft, whose Windows operating system owns close to 90 percent of the market, experienced one such embarrassing incident on Tuesday, when it was noticed that one of the company's ads on its Polish site was changed from a U.S. version to Photoshop out the face of a black man at a company meeting. In addition, the photoshopping (or perhaps using MS Paint, by the looks of it) was likely hastily performed, taking no effort to change the color of the man's hand and including a large smirking head that seemed strangely out of place on the body. Additionally, it was also noticed that the man was using a MacBook in both ads, with the logo photoshopped out in both, but the characteristic case was unchanged.

Does Waterloo Comment Align White House With DeMint?

According the the Washington Post, the “advisor” says “I don’t understand why the left of the left has decided that this is their Waterloo,” parroting the words if not the context of the cynical Sen. Jim DeMint (R) of South Carolina, by way of ‘C’ Street.

Sherwood Ross: Congress Shirks Its Responsibility, Allows White House to Make Wars.

Although the Constitution requires Congress to make the decision to go to war and to decide the kind of war to be fought (naval, land, air), since the Korean conflict it has largely abdicated that responsibility to the president, says a law school dean and authority on the issue. The result has been more frequent (and frequently misguided) wars, than there would have been had Congress done its duty.
