Not so fast: House health care vote is just the first step | McClatchy

Any momentum from Saturday's historic House approval of a sweeping health care overhaul is likely to be short-lived as the focus moves to the Senate, where progress has been stalled for weeks. Washington lawmakers on Sunday had two views of what the House's 220 to 215 vote means. One was that the narrowness of the vote, with 39 Democrats opposed, showed the weakness of the bill. President Barack Obama, whose top lieutenants lobbied furiously, including a presidential visit to the Capitol 11 hours before the vote. "Most of our constituents agree we have a very serious problem with the health care system, but in terms of how you fix it, the country is very divided," said Rep. Allen Boyd, D-Fla., one of the Democrats who voted no.

Odds Are Against Real Health Care Reform In Senate, But House Vote Was Worth It

The public option for health insurance probably doesn't stand a chance in the Senate. Renegade Joe Lieberman and several "blue dog" DINOs are very likely to stop it from getting to an up-or-down vote like we saw in the House late Saturday. But it was worth it to go this far, for three big reasons.

Sobering Numbers in the House Healthcare "Victory"

While many were celebrating the historical nature of the House vote there are also reasons for real Democrats to temper celebration. Of course, we all know the ripping the House version, which actually did include some good things will get in the "House of Lords" we all know as the U.S. Senate. Of course, we know that we actually have a paltry majority in the Senate or quite possibly still a Republican majority, but the House Healthcare vote should give us a sobering reminder of just how small of a majority we have in the House.

Thank Congress, it Took 'Courage' to Pass Health Care Bill by AFL-CIO

Last night, 220 members of Congress showed they’re on the side of working families, not big insurance companies. They’ve earned our thanks for keeping their promises and passing landmark health care reform. Our friends at Health Care for America Now (HCAN) have set up an easy tool where you can contact your member of Congress and thank him or her for voting “Yes” on H.R. 3962. We demanded this change with our votes and our voices, and House members stepped up to make it a reality

HOUSE PASSES HEALTH CARE BILL - Democratic Underground

The US House of Representatives passed the Health Care Bill, moving the process on to the Senate now to take up their own version of a Health Care plan. The bill garnered Republican support from a single member, Joseph Cao (pronounced Gow) from Louisiana. The final vote 220-215. In the end, only 39 Democrats voted against the legislation and, again, Republican support from across the aisle was gained with a single vote of support by Rep. Cao (R-LA) Read more: http://www.cspan.org

Michele Bachmann Offers Nancy Pelosi a House Call, Plus What Appears to Be a Free HR 3962 Enema

That's just sick. Then again, it's just as sick as telling vulnerable people that the government is part of a worldwide conspiracy to undermine our economy, or telling them they should slit their wrists and break the law, or calling selfless American volunteers socialist brownshirts, or suggesting that the media should conduct a McCarthy-esque investigation into the American-ness of elected representatives, or basically just about anything else Michele Bachmann has done in the past year or three. Plus, practically making out W. I mean, that was sick. But not quite as sick as our crazy healthcare system. And that's the point, I suppose.

Safe Crack Houses in Canada

Several cities in Canada now have programs that provide safe crack pipes to drug users with the aim of curbing diseases like HIV. Programs like this and Canada’s government funded safe-injection sites are being criticized by the United Nations for violating the International Narcotics Control Board that Canada signed onto in 1988.

A Real Winning Democratic Strategy for 2010

One thing I keep seeing a lot about is how Democrats are going to lose in 2010. Everyone seems to be wandering what strategy they can come up with to hang onto the House and Senate. A lot of people want to predict doom and gloom for our party and they may be right. However, I believe the strategy they think we should impose misses the mark.

House Votes to Protect Gay Americans From Persecution

The House of Representatives today voted to expand the definition of hate-crimes legislation to include sexual orientation, gender, gender identity or disability. This legislation was the culmination of years of attempts to curtail the type of crimes such as the murder of Matthew Shepard, a gay college student in Wyoming who was murdered in 1998. It comes as Human Rights groups prepare to march upon Washington this weekend which will be culminated by a speech to the Human Rights Campaign by President Obama.

Britain overtakes US as top financial center

The ranking, compiled by the World Economic Forum (WEF), places the UK at the top of a leader board of 55 of the world’s largest financially-focussed countries. The US, which had previously held the top spot, slipped to third, behind second-placed Australia. The poll will fuel the ongoing debate as to whether London or New York is the best place to do business for financial communities, amid recent reports that a growing number of hedge funds are moving to New York due to lighter regulation.

Docs as Props– Healthcare-NOW!

A majority of doctors support Single Payer so when Obama invited a hundred doctors to the White House they thought they would get a chance to talk to him. Instead they were used as props for a photo-op and then sent home. What a waste! Think how many people those doctors could have treated if they hadn't wasted a day. Think how disgusted they feel at being *used* as photo props to push Obama's awful Individual Mandate plan. Think how much wisdom they embody if Obama had been willing to listen. But Obama only listens to corporate lobbyists with millions to spend on denying health care to Americans.

Barlclays sheilds themselves in the Cayman Islands..."Barclays sells $12bn of risky assets"

Two top bankers are leaving Barclays to manage a fund in the Cayman Islands that is buying $12.3bn (£7.47bn) of the bank's most troublesome assets.Under the deal terms , Stephen King and Michael Keeley will set up C12 Capital Management which, while based in New York, will manage the new Cayman Islands-registered fund Protium and buy the assets from Barclays. The deal was criticised by analysts who questioned its complexity, but it will enable the British bank to report a more stable performance in future. Throughout the financial crisis, Barclays has been forced to defend the way it was pricing and accounting for these troublesome assets and is now hoping to smooth out the effect of the investments on its profits. The assets will not actually be removed from the bank's balance sheet for regulatory purposes but the accounting treatment will be changed, allowing Barclays to avoid taking further big hits by no longer needing to price its assets at current market values through the convention known as "mark to market".

Has the Stimulus Really Created or Saved One Million Jobs?

On Thursday, the president’s Council of Economic Advisers released its first quarterly report (PDF) on the economic impact of the stimulus. The next day’s headlines seized on a single number in the report: one million, the council’s estimate of how many jobs the stimulus had created or saved. But how solid is that number? According to the report itself, not very.

Where are the white people with good sense these days? Are you out there? Because a frenzied subset of our paler population are withdrawing their budding genuises from school today so that Little Johnny will not have to be subjected to listening to that bad, bad man, President Barack Obama.

What the Hell is "Fracking" and How Does it Poison Our Groundwater?

Water: two hydrogen, one oxygen...and the crystalline compound adamantane? With 2-butoxyethanol, or 2-BE? That's what citizens in states like New Mexico, Alabama, Ohio, Texas, Pennsylvania and Colorado are finding in their drinking water. The culprit? Fracking. Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, is a process used by natural gas and oil companies. Fracking allows the oil and gas in reservoir rock to move more freely from the rock pores. A chemical mixture of sand and fluids is injected under high pressure, which creates or enlarges fractures in the rock to unlock the deposits buried deep underground. Then the oil and gas is able to move to a production well where the it can be brought to the surface.

TheHill.com - House Dem won't vote for Pelosi as Speaker

A freshman House Democrat from Alabama said Tuesday he would not vote for Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) as Speaker again because of her “divisive and polarizing” image. “I would not vote for her,” Rep. Parker Griffith (D-Ala.) told a constituent at a town hall meeting when asked if he'd support Pelosi. “Someone that divisive and that polarizing cannot bring us together.”
